What Does the Bible Say About Clothing, Fashion and Self-Expression?

Fashion says more about us than we sometimes realize. What we wear can show what we like, what culture we connect with and how we see ourselves.

So where does Christianity fit into that?

Does God care about fashion? Is caring about clothes vain? Should Christians only wear “Christian” clothing? The Bible does talk about clothing, but the main focus is not style.

It is identity.

Your clothes do not define your worth

1 Samuel 16:7 says:

“People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

That is the foundation. Your value does not come from the brands you wear, the outfit you put together or how other people judge you.

That idea is personal to Scum. People do not determine your value. God does.

Your clothes can reflect who you are, but they should never be the thing that defines you.

Is fashion wrong for Christians?

No. There is nothing wrong with liking clothes, design or personal style. Fashion can be creative and expressive.

The problem starts when appearance becomes your identity, or when you need other people’s approval to feel valuable. That is the difference between enjoying fashion and depending on it.

Does Christian clothing need to look “Christian”?

Not really. There is no Christian uniform.

A Christian can wear streetwear, vintage, workwear, a suit or a hoodie. Faith does not belong to one aesthetic.

That is also how we look at Christian streetwear at Scum. The clothing should genuinely look good and feel wearable. Then the meaning behind the design gives it another layer.

That can be Scripture, symbolism, a reminder or an idea rooted in faith.

The outside should reflect what is happening inside

In Matthew 9:17, Jesus talks about new wine and old wineskins. The verse is not about fashion, but the image is powerful.

When your identity changes, the way you live should start to reflect that. That can affect your words, choices, creativity and sometimes even the way you present yourself.

But wearing Christian clothing does not make someone more Christian. The clothes should reflect the identity. They should not create it.

Colossians 3:12 puts it beautifully:

“Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

That is the clothing that matters most.

At Scum, the goal is simple: create clothing around faith, identity and purpose. But the clothes are not what give you worth.

God already did that.

Frequently Asked Questions About Christianity, Clothing and Fashion

The Bible focuses more on the heart, character and intention behind how we present ourselves than on one specific style of clothing.

No. Fashion and creativity are not wrong. The issue is when appearance becomes a source of pride, identity or worth.

1 Timothy 2:9–10 says believers should dress “modestly, with decency and propriety” and not let expensive clothing or outward appearance become the main focus.

Biblical modesty is therefore about more than how much skin you show. It also includes humility and not using clothing, wealth or status to prove your value.

Yes. Christianity does not require one specific clothing style. Streetwear can still reflect Christian values, creativity and identity.
