The Meaning Behind Scum

The word scum is what people use for something they see as worthless.
For me, that feeling came before the brand.
Growing up, I was judged because of how I looked, where I lived and the kind of background I came from. I got stared down, treated differently and sometimes felt like people had already decided who I was before I even spoke.
For a while, that made me angry.
Eventually, my mom noticed the change in me and brought me back to church. That is where I started to understand something that became the foundation of Scum:
people do not determine your value. God does.
So even when the world saw me as scum, god put a line through that.
That is why there is a line through SCUM.
Later, I came across 1 Corinthians 4:13:
“when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment.”
Paul and the apostles were mocked and rejected, yet still chosen and used by God.
That gave the name an even deeper meaning.
The world can look at someone and see nothing.
God can look at the same person and see purpose.
That is what Scum Clothing is built around.
Our designs are not just made to look good. The Scripture references, graphics and details all come back to faith, identity and purpose.
It is also the thinking behind pieces like Patch Worthy: being damaged does not mean you have lost your value.
Scum exists for anyone who has ever felt overlooked, judged or written off.
Even when the world saw us as scum, God saw our true worth.
